DI-30 not recognized by XP 1

I can't wait to use my new old DI-30, but XP (pro) just can't see it. I've heard this is a common problem, but the solutions I've found are not working for me. If there is a conflict, (could it be my GE-Force Video card???) I can't find it. Device Manager says its working. Driver's from Hastec. Echo's installed, but obviously not working. The drive itself works; it was cooking on 98! Help!!!

Yes. And for the record, it's not a GE-force card; I was thinking of my other machine. Too much headbanging around this problem; I brought it up because I read another thread with such a conflict.

Thanks, I'll try that. I know the unit is functional because it was cooking in 98, before I switched to XP. It also is powered, loads and ejects... etc.

...interesting. Apparently my tape drive is ancient. Firmware version 1.08. Followed instructions to a T, but updating Firmware failed. Here's the error message(s), in full.

Upon running ideflash.exe; "A separate .bin file with new firmware is needed." Note that 4_13.bin is there, on the floppy.

Then, after detection; "Error. Old model Onstream drive detected. This program is only for the ADR2 drives (with firmware 5.xx) or the new DI-30 model (with firmware 4.xx). Program finished.

So. Any ideas?

Yepper, firmware it was. But, dammit, after all that, having got her working in my hack machine, and backing up the valuables therien, I ripped her out and plugged her into my workhorse, and now I've new troubles - something about ASPI. I'll surf some, and hopefully figure it out. If not, I'll post another thread. It's a beautiful machine when it works, but gripes what a lot of headaches!

Hi Matt,

Maybe you can help me out too. I also have a DI30, I installed Echo 3.7.02 and did the firmware upgrade to 1.09 and I can't seem to load the tape on my XP SP2 system. The drive says it's working in device manager, but it won't load. I switched from a Win 2000 machine to a win XP machine, and it was working fine in the old box. One thing I did notice on the Echo/1Safe tools/options menu it has the device listed with driver support=available and 1Safe=Needs reboot. The system has been rebooted several times, yet it still says "needs reboot".

I would also like to add that the tape previously loaded (before I did the hardware/firmware upgrade), but would not work. But now it won't even load. I insert the cartridge, but it won't take it in. Also, I need to add that I installed the Sc2k Win XP drivers found on the hastec website because I was trying to get this drive to work with NTBackup also. But, that wouldn't prevent it from loading the tape would it?

So the best the drive did was load, but not actually write to tape? Have you tried a new tape?

no... I only have one tape.
But it was working fine with the old OS, it was loading fine before I upgraded the Echo and the firmware. If I could only get the thing to load, I think it might work now. Before I did the upgrade, there was no "backup now" option available. I could not select anything in Echo/1Safe, but at least now the option is available, but it doesn't want to load. It actually pulls the tape in about 1 inch, but it doesn't load it.

If it physically won't pull the tape in, then it seems the drive is defective.

Yeah, but it was loading the tape fine until I started uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. I found this pdf file (below), I've tried all the steps except editing the registry. It was alittle unclear because it said to delete all the volume entries, yet in step 2 on page 4 it shows a delete of Dosdevices\Z:, which I don't think is the right thing to do, probably just the \??\Volume entries is what they mean (?). I still find it funny that in my Echo software under the tools, device options under the 1Safe caption for the tape drive it says "Needs reboot". Even in the doc below it says "Started".

I think I'm going to follow the regedit procedure. Any idea why the DI30 says "needs reboot"?

Hang on, you're not listening, you want to troubleshoot a piece of hardware that never worked right? The best it ever did was load a tape, but it never did write to the tape, correct?

So disconnect your hard disk. Turn on the system, should fail to load an OS, now see if its any different. I expect it will still fail to load. This will rule out any OS or drivers issues.

And again, its one thing for a tape unit to load a tape and spit it out, but if it won't load at all, and it has the most recent firmware flashed, then its a problem with the unit itself.
