I have set up a router to my internet connection and connected a pc and a mac to the router. The mac works perfect but when I try to renew the ipconfig I get the message that the DHPC server is unavailable.
The mac was originally connected to the internet directly.

Most, but not all routers seem to have a DHCP server built in. It might be worth enabling it in your kit. Ian Boys

Well the router is supposed to have a inbuilt DHPC server how do I enable it ?

Usualy the manual of the router will give the factor default IP address of the router. What you need to do is: Go on your PC, click start, run, and type routers ip address> and click "ok" the you should get access to the router buildin
software and enable the DHCP server from there.

Something like this And click OK

The ip adress that the pc has is 169.254. and so on but the ip adress on the mac is 192.168.0.2 so it seems that the pc cant get through to the router. I have been trying to get the pc connected for 4 days and I´m all out of ideas.

funkuz,

In your other thread, you said you had a hub, not a router (I suggested router was more normal). So, have you now bought a router? If so, have you tried Bossbambos's suggestions - should be the way to go.

btw - how is the mac's IP address assigned? (is it picking up automatically, or is it manual)?

Ok,
169.254... is an IPIPA address witch confirms that the PC does not see the DHCP server.
Also what is the OS of the PC?
Try and ping 192.168.0.1, this is probably your router and let me know if you getting a replay.
Also have you try my previous suggestion?

Yeah the mac detects it automatically and I bought a router but still the PC will not detect the DHPC server.

Allso I tried to connect to the router build in but no reply. Tried to change the cables but still no luck.

How do I ping the ip address ?

I am running win2000 and the mac is running macos X. As far as I can see then everything is running right but the pc just will not find a DHPC server not even if it s connected to the straight to the internet( not to the router but straight to the socket).

To run the ping command:
click start, run, type: cmd click ok and type

"ping 192.168.0.2" this will ping the mac and also confirm that your network cable is good, and let me know.

It recieved no reply from that address so you reckon that the cable is disfunctional

Before we say is a faulty cable could you put a static IP address on your PC something like this:

IP: 192.168.0.3
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0

Save the settings, do the ipconfig to confirm this is your new IP address, and then reping the Mac.

all sendings timed out so it could be the cable. But the router still shows the link light for the pc and the ethernet adaptercard also shows a light.

Try and swap the cables between the MAC and PC if you dont have a spare one and see.

On a pc i would suspect faulty install of dial up networking cured by a remove and reinstall of networking. I have never worked on a MAC but if that option exists that would be a place to start.

The cable works on the mac so I gues it´s allright. I have removed and installed the ethernetadapter a couple a times. Any other suggestions
