cant connect my win2000 clients to my dhcp server in win2k server ad (new to dhcp)

i'm using adsl with external modem
1 lan card

here are my server settings (static add from the isp)

ip add - 202.138.189.147
subnet - 202.255.255.248
gateway - 202.138.189.145

preferred dns - 202.138.189.147

dhcp settings (hope i'm not missing anything
scope - 192.168.10.1 - 192.168.10.150
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0

workstation settings
ip add - automatic
dns- automatic

if i change to client to be a member of the domain it says 'the specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted.

what iam missing? can u give a the complete details i need to change

ty

Changing the subnet mask will not correct the problem. If your server has only the above specified address, 202.138.189.147, it is in a different network. A 192.168.x.x network cannot see a 202.x.x.x network without a router. You need to either add a router or a 2nd NIC to the server and have it do the routing thru RRAS.... Thanks,

Matt Wray

In DHCP have you done the following:

Activate the scope?
Authorize the Scope?
DHCP Server have a static IP?

In DNS have you done the following:
Enter the DNS IP address as a "FORWARDER"
(that is if you are going to host DNS in your local domain)
Local DNS server have a static IP?

thanks for all your reply

my 202.138.189.147 is static given by the isp
i guess matwrat is right? i need to have another nic or router to solve the problem but mye concern is the issue on rras

how and what should be my settings if i use another nic or router (ip address, gateway, dns, etc

any settings on my dns/dhcp service on my win2k server

Setting up RRAS is not too bad. You will need to open the RRAS snap-in, under admin tools. Then right-click your servername and choose Configure RRAS. Choose the option for network routing. After that is set up you will need to add NAT as a protocol. And set a static route with dest 0.0.0.0, and mask 0.0.0.0 from your internal NIC out your external NIC. Post back and we'll help you set it up...
If you want the quick and easy, buy a DSL router... Thanks,

Matt Wray

thanks for the help

some told me that using another nic would leave my internal network open for attack so i opt to to install an external router. i just got a dlink di-704 broadband router

i followed the instructions and set the ff (hope i was right)

i was able to ping the router - 192.168.10.1 but after changing back my nic to its static address - 202.138.189.147 it can not browse.

i gues i have to reinstall my router but what should be my wan settings (Wan address, wan gateway, etc.) to make it work

The router's WAN side should have all the settings that your ISP assigned you. The WAN side should have the address 202.138.189.147, subnet 255.255.255.248, gateway 202.138.189.145. The DNS setting of 202.138.189.147 is wrong. The DNS setting cannot be the same as your assigned IP address.

On the LAN side, the router should be assigned its address through your DHCP server. This address should be 192.168.xxx.xxx.

thanks.

i was able to setup the router at 192.168.10.1, dns is from the isp too. 202.138.128.1 and 202.138.128.2

my concern now is rras and dhcp settings can u guide me on the steps

thanks matt,

a refresher..
my first problem then was my clients cant log to my domain, because i have to diff network addrs (one static add of the server and the other my internal network). it was suggested that i have to install another nic or router to this. i was able to install the router dlink di740p but still they cant log. dont know what to do next.... are there settings on rras?

here are my setting again
server settings(static fr the isp)
ip - 202.138.189.147
subnet mask - 255.255.255.248
gateway - 202.138.189.145
dns - 202.138.189.147 (local)

router settings (hope this was correct)
lan ip add - 192.168.10.1
wan - ip 202.138.189.147
wan subnet - 255.255.255.248
wan gateway - 202.138.189.145
dns - 202.138.128.1 & 2

dhcp scope
start - 192.168.10.1
end - 192.168.10.150
subnetmask - 255.255.255.0

i just want to allow my win2k workstation to log to my win2k domain server

what am i missing

Maybe I'm wrong but your router's WAN IP can't be the same as your server's IP (202.138.189.147).

Also, why is the router using a different DNS IP then the server?

Accessdabbler has got it. Change you server IP to a 192.168.x.x address and see if that helps.
Now your router does show a connection to the internet in the settings page, correct?
Also, in your DHCP Scope Options, set options: 003 Router to 192.168.10.1, 005 for (WINS for downlevel clients) 192.168.10.1, and 006 DNS to 192.168.10.1. Remove the address 192.168.10.1 or create an exclusion in your DHCP scope, as you don't want to have 2 machines fighting for the same IP. Change those settings and see if the network comes up.
When you get that working, we'll tackle RRAS.... Thanks,

Matt Wray

greetings! i just reinstalled my win2k server - did not promote to dc. i need to start from scratch. assist pls

heres what happened

router settings
lan ip add (router ip) - 192.168.0.1 (default)
wan - ip 202.138.189.147
wan subnet - 255.255.255.248
wan gateway - 202.138.189.145
dns - 202.138.128.1 & 2

server settings
ip - 192.168.10.200
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.1
dns - 202.168.128.1 & 2

i can now ping the router (192.168.0.1)
i can ping the server (192.168.0.200
but i cant ping my gateway/dns/subnet...
i cant browse the net

some notes i got from the isp (i hope this helps)
ip pool - 202.138.189.144
default gateway - 202.138.189.145
ip modem - 202.138.189.146
subnet - 255.255.255.248
ip scop - 202.138.189.147 - 150

is there some incompatibility with my smartlink ecr8000 with my dlink di704p router (residential gateway)

Can you ping the router's WAN side? Try "ping 202.138.189.147"

If that works OK the problem is your connection between the router and ISP. You have High-speed or dialup?

Can the ISP ping your router's WAN IP?

Do you need to use PPPoE or PPTP?

hm.. i never saw such a ISP Data but try this:
Router IP WAN: 202.138.189.146

thanks for the reply

yes i can ping 202.138.189.147 but cant ping the gateway/dns
i'm connected through 256kbps adsl

if i dont use the dlink router it works fine by using these settings on my lan card (cable from the adsl modem & nic goes to the switch)

ip add - 202.138.189.147
subnet - 255.255.255.248
gateway - 202.138.189.145
dns - 202.138.128.1 & 2

It appears as if the main issue posed, which was "cant connect my win2000 clients to my dhcp server in win2k server ad (new to dhcp)", has been totally lost in this thread. There actually appears to be three issues:

1) Getting client PCs on the local LAN connected to a Windows 2000 domain

2) Getting said client PCs to use DHCP issued from a Windows 2000 domain controller.

3) Getting said domain controller connected to the Internet via an ADSL connection.

Before I go further, am I listing issues correctly kinalas?
