Windows XP
DELL Insiron 2650 (Laptop)
Linksys wireless nic card

Through what I've learned on this board, I have been able to get my laptop to get an IP address when windows starts up. (Before I was having the common problem of no DHCP support) I cannot, however, surf the web or ping the router once the computer is up and running.

I can release the ip via: Command > ipconfig /release
I CANNOT renew the ip via: Command > ipconfig /renew

To get to this point I have imported the winsock.reg from a working computer, I downloaded the winsockfix.zip, and I edited the registry fixing the values that the Norton uninstall left.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Which linksys adapter?

Before doing an Ipconfig /release, do an Ipconfig /all. Could you post the results here?

Can you ping the router? Can you ping yourself (ping 127.0.0.1)?

When it fails to renew the IP, what exactly is the error message you receive?

Sorry, I can't help, other than to say that I have a very similar problem in Windows 98/SE. Everything was working fine until 2 days ago, when I replaced my cable modem (Toshiba) with a new one (RCA). Whenever I reboot, I have internet access at the start of the reboot (confirmed by my cable company) and then I get locked out. In winipconfig I can at first see that I have a valid IP address, but when I do release/renew I get the following error message: "DHCP server unavailable renewing adapter".

The cable company refuses to help me any more because they say they are providing me with a signal, but something in my software is doing this. Two people there have told me it's my firewall (Zone Alarm Pro).

I have tried 3 things with Zone Alarm: I opened up all the settings as wide as possible, I set it to not automatically load at startup, and I even uninstalled it. None of these actions had any effect. But the cable company says that Zone Alarm may have set something in my registry to lock my access!

I'm stumped at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I started up my computer today and I again had an IP address. I got the following from the ipconfig /all command:

Windows IP Configuration

I was not able to ping the router at this point, but I was able to ping 127.0.0.1

I then released and renewed the ip address and got the following:

After running the program you posted, it forced my computer to restart. Once it loaded up again, the little twin computer icon in the bottom right was not present. After clicking on My Network Places and then Network Connections, the icon came up. Unfortunately, now I'm back to the following:

Address Type: Automatic Private Address
IP Address: 169.254.228.167
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:

Any ideas? Thank you very much for the time you are spending on me!

Good.

Now use Device Manager, or if using XP and the XP wireless client, Hit the "Configure" button for the adapter. Advanced, add your SSID, Channel and WEP settings if used. Apply these changes.

If using the Linksys Monitor or XP's wireless monitor, set the channel (if possible), the SSID and the WEP settings if used. Apply these changes

Note: a cold restart of the machine (rather than a reboot) would be advised.

All these settings are already correct. After turning my computer off and on again, it came up with all the correct information under the DHCP. It will not, however, connect to the net or renew the ip address.

The Lease Obtained date shows that the ip address was obtained just a few minutes ago. Why can the computer get an IP address on start up but not when everything is loaded? Could a program be causing this?

Note: When I use a USB Adapter to connect the computer to the router via cable, the internet works fine.

Maybe that might help solve this problem.

You are having issues with your authentication. Disable WEP on router and client for the moment.

On the client adapter proprties, disable 802.1x authentication as well.

If you have hotfix 815485 installed, remove this with Control Panel, Add/remove Programs.

The issue is that you are being answered on the DHCP request but not authenticating with the wireless router. This issue is likely due to WEP settings incorrect, SSID broadcast disabled on the router, 802.1x authentication enabled in a non-Radius or similar setting.
