DHCP Server not issuing IP Addresses. 2

I have a new Windows 2008 Server. I have DNS and DHCP servers up and running, but the DHCP server seems to not be issuing IP addresses. The DHCP server, and service are running. It has also been Authenticated.

If we set static IP addresses on our clients, they perform properly. There is only one scope, 192.168.5.X with the Gateway being 192.168.5.1 and the Server being 192.168.5.5. I uninstalled and reinstalled the DHCP server last night, and get the same issues.

We are using a Netgear router, and the DHCP settins are "Disabled" on the Netgear.

Any suggestions?

Have you authorized that dhcp server in the dhcp console???

Network+ Inet+ MCP

I'm pretty sure I have. From Administrative Tools, I went to DHCP and clicked on the server. At that point I click on Actions and the option I get is "unauthorize," so I am assuming that it is authorized.

Are all of the "client" PCs on the same physical network segment as the DHCP server? DHCP requests are broadcasts, and are not routable requests. If you need DHCP requests to traverse a router then you need to enable IPHelper or DHCP relay (depending on what your hardware supports).

All of the "client" PCs are on the same phyical network. The Netgear router is plugged into one 16 port switch, and all of the computers are then plugged into that same switch, including the Server. We have a very simple network structure.

I just double checked, the Server is authenticated, and the scope is activated.

By chance does your netgear router provide DHCP services? You may need to disable it before you can use your Win2K8 servers DHCP services

Yes. The Netgear does have the capability to provide DHCP services. I have it presently disabled. Still can't get the Windows 2008 server DHCP addresses to be issued. It doesn't make sense. Static IP addresses are working fine right now, so we are not in a critical situation. But I don't want to leave it that way forever. We will be starting to add more computers to the network after the Holidays.

Does DHCP work from the router if it is enabled? If not you still may have to set the ip helper/dhcp relay on the switch. Can you manage the Netgear switch or is it just an out of box unmanageable switch?

If you do an ipconfig /all does it list a DHCP server address?

biglebowski. Are you referring to ipconfig on the server, or the client?

Pretty sure he means the Client Side. If the address of the 2008 Server is in the DHCP Server line of an ipconfig /all on the client that means that you have incorrectly configured the settings within the DHCP manager.

Here is what is now happening. On the client computers, the IP Address and subnet mask ARE being generated. But the Gateway is blank. I obviously have something wrong in either the DHCP or DNS server.

I've looked through each, and can't find any settings that pertain to the Gateway. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You need to allocate "option 3 - Router" and set this as your gateway address.

This is Option '003 Router' where you should specify your router (default gateway) IP address.
