DHCP question (urgent) 3

I have two Win 2k servers and a NT server. One of the 2k servers is the domain controller. We have DHCP disabled on all servers. We load static i.p.s into the clients. I have a new laptop that I never loaded an i.p. into and something is assigning me an i.p. (private within our lan). I run ipconfig and it lists an i.p. even though I never loaded one in, its still left as assign automatically. I tried it with another laptop and it also gets assigned an i.p. (different #). How can this be?

in windows you can configure the APIPA address, if you are positive that there is not a DHCP server any where i'd check that reg key and see if thats were it is getting it from. other than that you shouldn't get a vailid private ip address if theres not one either staticly set or being given to it from a DHCP server.

it is getting the address because of the APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing)...this is used when you have no DHCP sever and when the network is a single subnet..

To see if this is right use the ipconfig/all command

if you see "Autoconfiguration Enabled" then you are using APIPA...

Sorry I found that APIPA uses a Class B address..

that is true but you can edit the ip address that you get from APIPA it doesn't HAVE to be a class B, if can be anything you want, even a public ip address. there is a reg key setting, if you want it i will pull it up for you.

Glad to hear that worked. I know how doctors can get, I'm at a hospital too and we tend to do lots of hoop-jumping for them just to satisfy a random whim.

Yeah we do plenty of that. Before I was hired I heard that they allowed this same doctor to play with his Apple airport and somehow it screwed up the router table for our router. No internet for anyone. We are working on this Hipaa security thing, trying to clean stuff up. kmcferrin, I am sure you are aware of that. Thanks again for the info.

Hi all sounds like the same problem I have been having at my school, 150 PCs and 1 arty guy who "must" have a Mac!
He bought an air port configured it himself and hey presto it started dishing out IP address and screwing up the network.
I set up static IP address but it still mucked things up by asigning address to my printers and switches.
I am considering jumping on his laptop as he won't be told!!!

Yes Mac people are very determined! So far we are coexisting well but I keep a very close eye on what he does and he has learned that I am not giving in.

It also sounds like he has his airport setup wrong. He can set it up to hand out private (10.x.x.x) IP's and still accomplish what he wants. That way he can get what he wants, and you can get what you want....

With DHCP you could also take his MAC address and reserve a "bad" IP number like 127.0.0.1 for his airport and he would go no where for it regardless of what he does.

I work for a public school which is 2/3 Mac, and most of the MAC users "believe" they know better than I do on how to run things. They keep going behind my back and try to do things "their own" way. Especially with iTunes, iPods, and Airport Express etc....I learned early on how to " manage" rogue equipment...now if I could just get my AD 100% repaired (see my own thread)

Yeah, we try to stop all that stuff. I have a firewall that is really good at blocking stuff. I also run a program called audit wizard that tells me when a user installs something and if it is not authorized they get a prompt email to remove it. Its a constant challenge to keep them from themselves! ha ha If all else fails, just unplug their ethernet port from the switch!
