DHCP nightmare 2

I have just setup our DHCP server on the Win2k Server.

We have 150 Winnt machines, some are grabbing IP's no problem.

But loads are grabbing IP already being used, by another
machine, or so the error on screen says.

When I (ipconfig /renew), it just grabs the same address again...!!!

In Address leases in the scope, there are loads of bad addresses appearing.

How or why are the workstations, grabing IPs
that have been used?

I thought the whole point of a DHCP server was to
stop this...!!!

We never had this problem with our NT Server DHCP server.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

If i was u..
Are they using the entire scope of addresses available? If not, I would set up a restriction immediatly to block the range of addresses that are ALREADY being used and force new clients grabbed the unused area.. This way the machines that already have an address will hold it till the lease is up and then you can reenable the part you restricted cause the machines that are grabbing bad addresses now will have good address with lease's.. make sence...?

Are you use both DHCP servers together?

if you have two dhcp servers, make sure both of them aren't using the same scopes.

snootalope cheers I may try this workaround tomorrow.

We do not have two DHCP servers running,
we switched off our NT Server last week,
then set up our 2k DHCP server this week.

Any suggestions on what is causing the problem?

Have you tried setting the lease expiration really low to force the workstations to grab a new IP. Are the clients all the same OS type (ie win98, winME, win2K). Sometimes removing the computer from the domain and readding it also helps. just my 2cents worth

have you tried doing a /release /renew?

I had a similar problem and it ended up being that the addresses already held by the PC's were not distributed by the new DHCP server. Until the lease runs out or is released, the DHCP server does not know the lease is really active and so issues a new one. A release / renew fixed it for me.

I also found my old server once rebooted, had started the DHCP services again. I have since disabled the services, but they did cause a bit of confusion there for a bit.
