dhcp lease question

we are having some issues with our IP phones, and I was trying to wrap my head around how DHCP works. (win 2003 server is dhcp server).

the phone isnt working, and when I go to the users desk, it says it is waiting on response from DHCP server.

dhcp lease is set for 8 days.
so my understanding is that after 50% of the lease time the client will ask to renew, what happens at that time if it cannot communicate with the dhcp server?

after all, the lease hasnt expired yet.

Need more information. What kind of phones? DHCP is one of the simplest internet protocols there is. Have the phones ever worked? Is there any error messages on the server? We'll be glad to help, but we need a lot more specifics. Thanks.

zultys is the phone system type, and we havent had them long. no errors on the server that we saw.

so theoretically, if halfway through the lease period a PC or whatever cannot contact the DHCP server, what is supposed to happen?
should it hold its current IP address, since the lease is not up yet?

Yes, it should keep it's current ip address. Unless it get's the word to release it, nothing changes.

It sounds like you verified, from the perspective of the dhcp server, dhcp requests are not reaching the server.

I might suggest ensuring that the phone is making the dhcp request on the correct vlan.
