I would like to know if it is possible to setup my single Redhat 6.1(Cartman), Kernel 2.2.12 Linux box to serve the internet to itself and my window$98 box. How would this be done. I assume I need two Ethernet Cards in the Linux box (currently has 1 Linksys EtherPCI LAN Card II). The windows box also has the same card. I also have two Realtek cards not in any machines. All cards work.
My current setup is my Linux box and my windows box are connected on a 5 port hub. I can ping from Linux to windows and vice versa, I can telnet from Windows to Linux. But, I cannot FTP from windows to linux or vice versa.

All documentation I've been able to find concerning firewalling and serving internet to an internal network says to have one Ethernet card for intranet and one ethernet card hooked to a cable modem or DSL. I don't have either, and probably won't for a while. Is there a way to do this without a cable modem/DSL hookup?
Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
I did this with a Sun box (ages ago) so it is possible.

If your linux box is set up to dial-up the internet you are more than halfway there.

I'm presuming that your network is using static IP addresses rather than DHCP.

On the Win box set the IP of the linux box to be your default gateway. (Control Panel, Network, TCP Properties)

Set up linux to do IP forwarding (don't know how to do this bit..... as I said, it was a while ago)

Hope this gives you a start Jon.
Mike
michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com
<a href= Cargill's Corporate Web Site
I agree with what mike said.

You might also look for information on "dial on demand" or internet connection sharing for linux. redhat's site is also a good place to look for information pretaining to their O/S.

Good luck,

Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

Thanks for the info

Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
