DHCP and ICS intermittence

Hi,

I have a Win2k server with ICS to serve Internet for a local group. The previous server (which was working OK with ICS) is now configured as a workstation and DHCP client and it gets it's IP from DHCP. Previous machines with Win98 are getting IP OK, but a new one doesn't. Same thing with some Win2k Pro: some do get IP from DHCP and some don't.

They are setup quite the same way, except there are some version in english and some in french. If I put a static IP (192.168.0.x) together with the gateway at 192.168.0.1, everything is fine.

I shut down the previous server, just in case, but to no avail.

If I try ipconfig /renew, it tells me that the DHCP server is unreachable.

I installed Netbeui, and the only thing it does is to help recognize the local network.

I searched the WEB and Microsoft support, but there is no indication that DHCP would have this type of behavior.

Workstation with Win2k Pro are configured plain vanilla with BlackIce. I disabled BlackIce, but to no avail.

Any idea?

Win2K server does not do ICS sharing (yes, it is installed by default and such, but M$ says this doesn't work on the server.) You are supposed to run RRAS NAT on this instead of ICS. I would recommend using NAT, you may get ICS to work if you play with the mini-dhcp server configuration this created, but you will have troubles keeping this running.

I would have to disagree with Alex. ICS DOES work on Win2k, however, there are a few caveats; You cannot be using DHCP or RRAS on the same box; the IP address of the ICS server will be set to 192.168.0.1.

It sounds like you may have a name resolution problem. Try pinging, from the problem workstation, the server by name. Also, try pinging by IP address. If you can ping by IP, but not by name, you have a DNS issue. You can try adding the name/ip of the DNS server in the lmhosts file to see if that fixes your problem.

Also, if you have older Win9x clients, you'll probably need a WINS server to resolve NetBIOS names.

Thank you for the advice. I will try that. I also disagree with Alex, because the previous win2k server was working OK without any problem with ICS and every workstation would get automatically on the Internet, Win2k Pro or Win98. But sureley, you cannot use ICS and RRAS together.

I installed the new Win2k server withe the same setup, used as a peer to peer network. This client doesn't need the domain and active directory stuff.

When a server is used as DHCP, it is supposed to listen for demands from new DHCP client and then reply to it and give it a new IP. But this one does it OK with the previous ICS server (which was reconfigured as an ICS client), does it OK with a Win98 machine (configuration on this machine was not changed).

Newer Win2k Pro and Win98 will not get the DHCP address and have to be configured manually with fixed IP and gateway.

I will try the lmhost thing, but I am reluctant to use NetBios for security reasons.

I always manage to find a solution, but it takes some time and a lot of reboots...

It's always good to have some good advice, because some time my nose is too close to the computer!

Thanks again for your time,

I have set up Win-2000 Advanced Server (for the first time) as an experiment.

Everything seems to be OK (users, permissions, file and printer shares) apart from ICS. I'm operating over a 512k cable modem and the speed seems to get slower and slower until it grinds to a halt.

Any one have a solution?

And what is the RRAS NAT thing and where is it?

thanks,
Andrew.
