I am a contractor and I have recently received a disk of cadd files, all of which have the DGN extension. I have Autocad R14 and 2000i. Can either of these open these DGN files or do I need to call the architect and have him send me DWG files? Also, which software will read the DGN files and be compatible with the Autocads that I have?

They are Microstation files. They should be able to export them as dxf files. You can buy import/converters but if they can export them the way you want, just do that.

If your Architect has Microstation 5, 95, or SE, he should be able to export it to DWG format and send it back to you.

If you have AutoCAD Map you can save it as a dwg.
