Hi All,
I have a dg834g router and can no longer get to the admin page (via 192.168.0.1) or connect to the web from my PC, even after multiple router resets to factory defaults.
However I can get on to it from another machine in the house that uses it for connection to the internet.
So therefore it would appear to be an issue with my PC.
I've done an ipconfig /flushdns but still no joy....
can anyone help???

I can work off my old modem dirctly connected

If this is with the problem PC then the problem is NOT the network card it is something else. I'm losing the topology of the network. From what I've read it's:

2 PCs=>Router=>Broadband of some sort (DSL or cable)
One PC works, one does not.

One PC=>old router/modem=>Broadband
Works fine.

Is this a correct layout and summation to date?

Tony, you caught it before me...

open up your Internet Options (IE >> Extras >> Internet Options) under the tab called Connections, there is a window called VPN & DIAL UP Connections, make sure that that is EMPTY (meaning that nothing is listed there)...

Sorry, I don't think I've been clear.
I can get the non working PC to work by linking up to a USB modem I used to use before I got the router. So this cuts the netwok card out of the equation.

I'm sure it's the network catd, I'll order one today and let you know.

Thanks again for all your help everyone. I've learnt loads.
thanks

One other thing to try before the new card is to uninstall the network card, and reinstall. Even though it's not working correctly with 2 different installs of Windows, does not necessarily matter. I don't know how far they do, but I do know they do share some resources, at least if you install XP and Vista on the same machine - in other words, you can have one install of your Program files, and both point to that, so I don't see why the same wouldn't be true for drivers.

What I would do:
1. Go to device manager
2. Right-click on your network adapter, and choose "remove"
3. Answer yes or okay.
4. After finished, right-click on any one item, and select "check for new hardware" - it may say "search..." just choose the "...new hardware" one.
5. After it reinstalls, see if things work better - oh, and make sure you're connected to your router before you hit "search/check..."

If that doesn't work, based on everything else, then yeah, it's probably just the adapter itself. [wink]

I've tried uninstalling an reinstalling the network card as well. I was wondering if the isue was network card related.
Having said that windows reports that the network connection is 'connected' and device manager shows no issues.

Since he's already tried that, I doubt its a Windows issue.

As for sharing drivers, well you would have to had seriously altered one of the Windows installations, (even if they where in the same partition) to get them to share the same driver cache. Not that its impossible, but just highly unlikely.

After all that's been said, I do think it may be a card problem.

If 2 separate Windows installations have the same problem, it points to a hardware issue rather than a Windows issue.

If a new card still doesn't work then there might be something else wrong.

I guess the last thing to do would be to remove Microsoft's Networking protocol and re-install it see if that brings it back. Unlikely, but worth a shot.

Not convinced... He probably still has the DIAL OUT entry in the Internet Options, and then of course the ROUTER will not work...

but:

and all the stuff we already pointed to, speaks for a hardware issue...

In attempt to speed-read this thing, vacunita, apparently, I missed the part where he already uninstalled/reinstalled.

How embarrassing! [blush]

No harm done, just pointing out he had done it. Which is why we had all concluded it sounded like a hardware problem at the end.

I'm sure the OP appreciates any additional input given.

Ohh and I so wish tek-tips had an "Edit Post" feature. Fouled up the quote tags big time.

Well...it's not like you're a coder, or a programmer, or anything like that...[smile]

Do you have a firewall installed and if so did you shut it off?
Have you tried restarting in safe mode with networking and see if it will connect?
Have you checked for a proxy server setting in the LAN settings in Internet Options?

New network card in, all working!
It was the onboard network card after all.

Thanks for all your input, I've learnt 'a shed load'.

Glad to hear its working now even if if it did require a new card.

Yep, a glad it's working from me aswell...

just for posterity, try the onboard NIC now, see if it is working again...

I had two issues (one on XP and one on VISTA) after a mobo switch, where the onboard did not work as it should, after installing a PCI NIC the onboard mysteriously started to work again...

Hi Ben,

Nope, doesn't want to know. Just sits there trying to get an IP address (the router set to dih out the IPS).
Can't connect via 192.168.0.1 either.
The new card is doing great and I can go back to the router from the USB modem which means the Mrs gets the web back which is good news for me.

thanks

Ok, that confirms it... onboard is toast... thanx for the reply...
