dg834g router can't get to admin page

Hi All,
I have a dg834g router and can no longer get to the admin page (via 192.168.0.1) or connect to the web from my PC, even after multiple router resets to factory defaults.
However I can get on to it from another machine in the house that uses it for connection to the internet.
So therefore it would appear to be an issue with my PC.
I've done an ipconfig /flushdns but still no joy....
can anyone help???

If you run ipconfig /all , do the IP configurations match those of the working PC?

They should identical except for the IP.

Can you ping the router?

Probably your winsocks got scrambled...

but before check your IP settings...

in a cli window type:

IPCONFIG /all

your IP adress should be displayed along with a lot of other stuff... note the IP and see if it corresponds with in the 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 range... if it does not proceed with changing the IP adress manually, here is a PDF that explains it nicely (save a copy for future reference)...

once done reboot and test the connectivity...

if that does not help then continue with the following...

Type in the RUN BOX or CLI window the following command:

netsh winsock reset catalog

then reboot...

Hi , thank both for your help.

The IP on the non working machine is 192.168.0.2. I can't ping the router from the non working machine.
Tried netsh winsock reset catalog
it procesed ok and asked me to reboot but still no joy.

it' done this before and then sorted itself - I'd always blamed it on my ISP. This time it's not sorting it's self out.

Is the http error 400- bad request? If so, uninstall Silverlight.

Is that similar to the IP for the working machine?

Could it be a bad cable?

If its wireless, does it require a wep or wpa key?

How is the functioning computer connected to the router?

1. follow SMAH's and Vacunita's suggestion... try another cable...

2. does pinging 192.168.0.2 and 127.0.0.1 work?

output should look something along these lines:

C:\>ping 127.0.0.1

if that does not work then take a look at your installed firewall, it may be blocking more than you think...

Hi all,
thanks for your answers.

The error I get wehn trying to connect to 192.168.0.1 (router admin) is 'The operation timed out when attempting to contact 192.168.0.1.'

I've uninstalled Silverlight any way and rebooted with no joy.
The working machine (can connect to the router) is on 192.168.0.3 and the non working one is on 192.168.0.2.

Both the working and non working PC are wired directly to the router with network cables, I've tried a new cable on the non working machine but the problem remains.

Pinging of 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 were both succesful and produced results as you expected Ben. (although my TTL was 128 not 64).

I've tried uninstalling an reinstalling the network card as well. I was wondering if the isue was network card related.
Having said that windows reports that the network connection is 'connected' and device manager shows no issues.

Try swapping out the cables between the two working machines.

I would also have a look at the Windows Firewall and check the contents of the HOSTS file (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC\HOSTS) it's not got an extension so just open it with Notepad.

What happens if you try pinging 192.168.0.3 from the .2 machine?

What happens if you try doing a tracert to .1 from your .2 machine? (tracert 192.168.0.1 from the cmd prompt).

The host file has just the one entry:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Ping fails from working (03) to non-working machine (02).
Ping fails from non-working machine (02) to working(03).

tracert from non-working to router (01) produced these results...

Sorry, that's drifting out of my undesrtanding.

In the properties of internet protocol (TCP/IP) the Ip setup is statically set up rather than 'assigned dynamically'

ip: 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
defaultgateway: 192.168.0.1

Is that what you're reffering to?

Hi Simon,

Nothing in the event log. 'Computer Browser' couldn't start but I enabled that and rebooted but still no success.

I enabled the DHCP server on the router, the working machine automatically got it's new IP in under a second. The non working PC thought about it for a while and returned a message of limited or no connectivity.

The even ID gave this error:
ID: 8033
The browser has forced an election on network /Device/NetBT_E100B5 because a master browser was stopped.

I might have missed this in this long thread, but have you tried bypassing the router completely and plugging the problem PC directly into the wall jack that the route connects to? Simply remove the router and plug the into the wall jack or whatever setup you have. If it's a cable or DSL modem you will want to power it down, then power the PC down, make the connections and power the PC back up. This will test the router as a possible source of the problem. Do this only briefly to avoid port scans etc.

Don't think I've missed this, but have you tried plugging the Ethernet cable into a different port on the router. Router ports can sometimes go faulty.

Is this a laptop or a minitower? If the latter, may be worth trying a new PCI network card. Had similar issues to this on a Dell recently - the new card solved the problem.

I've tried different ports and I'm begining to think it's my network card, but it shows up as connected fine so i don't know.
Thanks for the links BBB, just going through those now but the computer browser is disabled on the working machine so I don't think thi is the issue.

Very annoying.
I can work off my old modem dirctly connected but it means the Mrs doesn't have the internet which = trouble for me.

I actually have another installation of windows on my PC (not a different user an actual duel boot separate install).
Just booted that up and it doesn't work either.

To me its beginning to sound like it may be my network adapter (built into the motherboard (abit an8 32x)).

Yup, sounds like the Network card has started to fail. Its happened to me a few times with on board Network cards.

They will say they are connected but won't actually do anything.

I suggest you buy a new one, they should be fairly cheap these days.

And try that, if it works you can be sure its a Network card issue.
