DFS rootname and share

I'm creating a DFS root with the same rootname as the share it's based on. So when users map a drive letter to that DFS root do their systems pick the DFS or the Share for the mapping source?

Dfs link: A link is another share somewhere on the network that goes under the root. When a user opens this link they will be redirected to a shared folder.

That's not exactly what I was asking. I actually was planning to map users' drives to a DFS root not to a link. But thanks anyway.
