Good Afternoon All -

I am having problems setting up DFS Replication between a 2003 and a 2008 server. Both servers have DFS Replication installed however whenever I try to set the 2003 server to replicate over to the 2008 server I receive the following error... This target is not eligible because File Replication service is not installed (from DFS on 2003) and The following folder targets cannot be added as DFS Replication members, the DFS replication service is not installed (from DFS on 2008). The 2003 server DFS service shows that the 2008 server is the problem and the 2008 server DFS service shows that the 2003 server is the problem.. argh.. Any ideas on how to get these to play nicely together? Thanks in advance.

Just an additional bit of info.. 2003 server is FRS and 2008 server is DFS. Can it be done?

I have several windows 2003 (non-r2) replicating to a windows 2008 enterprise machine.

You need to install DFS on the 2008 machine.

To do this, I think you go to Computer management....Features...Add Features, then add the DFS tools. See the attached screenshot.

Thanks,
Andrew

I have DFS installed on the 2008 machine. It is replicating with other 2003 r2 systems, just not with the 2003 enterprise system.

This leads me to believe that you have the newer (FRS i think) replication piece installed, but not the legacy one (DFS i think) to make it work with pre-R2 versions of windows 2003.

It was over a year ago that I set it up, but I know I had to install the "older" DFS piece in windows 2008 to make it work with my pre-R2 2003 box.

Thanks,
Andrew

Yes, we have FRS (pre R2)installed. I could upgrade to R2 and probably fix the issue but was hoping someone had made this happen w/o R2. thanks for your help. I am pretty sure I have my answer from your experience as well as what I am reading around the Internet.
