DFS between servers...anyone do this?

Hello,

im running a server in usa and one in panama.
they are connected thru a vpn tunnel (openbsd boxes)

i currently got dfs mirroring a couple folders between the 2 servers. Seems to be working good.
I know with DFS, whoever saves the file last wins. No file locking is available.

Now my boss wants the main folder that contains our company files to be mirrored on both servers. It is 38.5gig
Is thier anything I should be aware of before doing this? Im sure it is going to take some time to complete the sycronization..we have t1 here, and panama some sort of frame relay...

Just as long as you have your sites/subnets/DC's setup correctly in Ad, then you should be ok. Also, I highly recommend having 2003 R2 on all machines involved, including DC's. DFS is MUCH better in R2 than it was in normal 2003.

Other than that, just plan on waiting for a LONG time.

We do this all the time and have 10 office, some with very slow links.

The way to do it initially is make sure all the servers involved are running R2. This is very important as R2 can just compare the differences between the file and just send the change.

Create a CD or Tape of the initial distribution of the folder. Roll it onto the destination box, then setup the replication. Since MOST of it will be the same, it won't take too long to make the comparisons, then have it go from there.

You could even modify the schedule to give it all bandwdith after hours, and limit the bandwidth during office hours.
