DFS and sharepoint

In our environment we have DFS that is serving 5000 users. Could we use Sharepoint services instead? for example users could click on a link and connect to their data without knowing what server is hosting their data.
 
That is precisely what Microsoft intends with MOSS 2007 Content Management. Using Document Libraries, Picture Libraries, Form libraries, and Wiki page libraries combined (or not) with Workflow (several types available).

Microsoft is wanting to veer away from the traditional 'mapped drive' and use the Content Management systems instead. However there is still a use for File Servers, as just that, File Storage.
