the cables are plugged in and it has power but the external drive is listed in veritas be as off-line. Does anyone have any idea why this would be?

It happens.

On the server, right click the icon My Computer, select Manage. Click on Device Manager. Do you see the tape device(s) listed there?

If yes, stop and start the Backup Exec services. That should take care of it.

If no, reboot the tape device(s). Once they are back up, reboot the server. That should take care of it.

i think its there. would it be listed as a disk device?

Nope, near the bottom of the list there will be something like:

+ Tape Devices

ok, yeah it's there. i've turned it off and turned it baack on today so I'll reboot the server this evening after everyone has left. thank you

If the tape device is showing in Device Manager, you might only need to stop and start the Backup Exec services. Have you tried that?

Right click My Computer, select Manage. Down by the bottom you will see something starting with Services. Expand that. Click Services. In the right window you will see Backup Exec services. Stop the one for Backup Exec Server. You will get a 'pop-up' saying their are dependancies, click ok to stop everything. Once they are stopped, restart them individually beginning with the server one.
