Hi, Customer has XP Pro(sp1) and what was to be a quick onsite call has taken 6 hours, still unresolved.

When attempting to create a Internet Dial-up connection Xp doesnt see the modem. Instead it decides to use com1 only.(modem on com3)
Then when the wizard finishes the connection has a big red X and says device unavailable on COM1.. no option to choose another device.
- The modem works fine. Have also tried a USB modem with the same result. Can dial via hyperterminal etc.
- SFC found nothing
- IP Reset did nothing
- I removed various applications.. no help
- Tried every BIOS combination you can think of including changing swapping com1-com3 and visa vera.
- IP stack works fine as I could connect with my Notebook via crossover cable.
- After trying all I could, spent 1.5 hours with MS on phone.. no result.

My next step is to install XP into a new directory and see if it works.. if yes Ill know its somthing in the current install or if not that its a motherboard/bios issue.(i think)
BTW.. i have never heard of the MOBO manufacturer .. "shuttle.com"

Good luck on this one !!

Shuttle are not that bad. is the home page.
First, what driver version are you trying to load?
Are you running the setup.exe for it?
What type of modem, what chipset?

In XP (and 2k) you do not "add new hardware" like in Win9x.
If it's detected, it will install a virtual com port (in this case com 3) because it's a winmodem. Then run the setup to install the correct drivers into c:\windows\system32 and c:\windows\inf and all should be well.
If the modem is installed correctly, then creating a new DUN should pick it up. You might try recreating Winsock by getting WinsockXPfix.exe from

Check to see if the Remote Connection Service Manager service is running.

Thanks for the posts.

1. Yes. The modem is installed correctly and works normally with all other apps.

2. Will try WinsockXPfix.exe, is this any different to command line . "netsh int ip reset reset.txt"
I have already done this but it didnt help

3. Yes. RCSM is running

Looking for someone who has seen this problem before.

Is there COM2 on this machine? Why is the winmodem picking COM3 instead of COM2.

Try deleting ports COM1 and COM2 from control panel sometimes they don't read the hardware correctly and deleting them sometimes resolves some driver problems.

Try disabling all onboard serial ports.

Try setting the control panel COM ports manually instead of AUTO use COM1:IO Base=3F8 IRQ4 COM2:IO Base=2F8 IRQ3. Let you winmodem or modem setup automatically.

Each step make sure the modem COM port and drivers are deleted.

What is the settings for modem and is it software configurable?

Thanks .. But i have done ALL of the above. Yes it will run on COM2 or 3..

Again.. I have tried this with 2 fifferent modems .. same problem. One on the otherboard, one USB.

I am going onsite in the morning to install Xp in fresh into a temp folder.. see if it is still a problem.

Stikman,

The Winsock utility recommended by Comtech does quite a bit more than just the netsh command.

Give it a try before re-installing XP.

Stikman,

I would also emphasize that you should change the IRQ and I/O port for COM3 so it does not conflict with COM1 in either of these respects. Finally, if COM2 is an unassigned device, move the modem to COM2. You want no holes in your COM assignments. This more likely angers the modem software than XP.

Thanks to all the replied to this thread.

Tried WinsockXPfix.exe .. no help.

Reinstalled XP Pro.. problem went away :)
