I am trying to set up a development environment for a sharepoint 07 portal using virtual pc running windows 2K3.
The virtual pc is running and we copied over the content databases to a new instance of sqlserver 05 running on a different server. When I install sharepoint on the vpc, do I connect to the existing server farm or create a new one?

If i connect to existing, how do I "point" to the new sql server and the vpc as the hosting site.

thank you

Don't you just use the wizard to connect up the SQL database?

-Laughter works miracles.

Which wizard are you refering to? One in the central admin, or the products and technology configuration wizard?

If I use the products and tech config wizard, it gives me the option of connecting to an existing wizard, or creating a new one. If I connect to existing, it points me to the production portal, which is not what I want to do. I just want a stand alone "copy" of the production portal.
thanks

If I have interpreted your aim correctly, you will need to create a new farm. This will create a new config database. You should then be able to connect to the COPY of your content database.

Thanks, that is what I did. A new config db and admin content db were created. Now I am unsure how to "connect" the db's that I copied over from production. Do I also need to create a "blank" portal and then connect or just connect to the db's after running the products and technology config wizard?

I appreciate your responce!

It's not something I've done before, but I'm happy to offer some ideas (especially as I might need to do it myself at some point ;-) ).

Firstly, I notice that both the "Create a new Web Application" (not extend) and "Add Content Database" (to existing web app) options let you specify both the database server and database name. Normally, you would specify a new database name but you may just need to give the name of the one you copied.

You might also want to have a look at the Microsoft Technet article "Deploy using DBA-created databases" as it might give you some useful information in this area:
Please let us know how you get on with this. Your experiences will almost certainly help other forum users.

Cheers, spv
