Folks, I have inherited a few servers that were configured to use a dedicated NIC for backups. I configured the DSM.OPT file accordingly but I am not sure if it is actually using the dedicated IP address (TCPClientAddress). Spoke to our TSM admins and they say they don't know how to determine if the traffic is flowing through this IP.
Does anyone know what to look for to ensure that traffic is going through the dedicated interface. I hate to have a customer ask me to prove that it's working and not being able to do so.

Hi

TCPClientAddress is only relevant if you're running the client scheduler in "server prompted" mode, and then it works in one of two ways:

(i) client can initiate sessions
In this case, when the schedule engine starts on the client, it contacts the TSM server and reports the value of TCPCLIENTADDRESS so the TSM server knows which address to use at the time of the next scheduled event for that client

(ii) client cannot initiate sessions
In this case, you have to hard-code the client IP address into the node definition on the TSM server with the "update node" command. Then the TSM server uses that address to communicate with the client.

What flavour of client are we talking about here?

Thank you Matthew, I am using option (1) and although i am pretty sure it's working.. how do I verify (through a log entry for instance) that this is the case

I am using TSM 5.3.4 on Windows 2003

Using a dedicated NIC for TSM is controled by both hosts network settings. Verify with traceroute from the client, if the route only shows the dedicated NIC, the routing is working correctly.TSM is using the dedicated NIC for backups.
A dedicated nic is controled by routing and lookup, backups from the client and restores from the server.

If traceroute from tsm server shows other nic, a ping to hostname should return the the dedicated NIC address. if it doesn't you are using the other NIC for restores.

When in doubt,,, Power out...

The thing is I can see the host from both interfaces fine. There must be a way to get this information from a log file. If the customer were to come to me tomorrow,I just can't tell them it works because I indicated this in the DSM.OPT file :) Guess I am going to have to test it by writing a bogus address for the TCPClientAddress param and restart the service
Thanks for your help nonetheless guys
