Determining Fileserver? HELP!! 1

My aloha POS is working fine, as long as I have only 1 Terminal on.

We have three terminals and the license for those. They are all setup the same in the settings, I think, but whenever I boot up a second terminal it gets stuck "determining fileserver" then reboots.

Any ideas, we are trying to open our restaurant next week.

First off, a newbie doing an initial setup with a store opening soon, you have my sympathy.

Determining FS could be anything from ridiculous easy to headache. Also, you need to post version info. But here's the most common solution to this message (ridiculous easy). I may be wrong, it could be for the message "locating FS". Anyway---

From the terminal, make certain all network info is configured correctly and drive is shared. Then <tools> map network drive, to z://Alohaboh/bootdrv. Check the box to reconnect next time.

Post back with what happens. Don't forget to give us version info (very important). A little more info and someone a lot smarter than me can steer you.

I'm assumming much here, like license info, terminals defined, network connections, Lana 0, yada, yada.

Thanks. I will get that info for you. Here's some info I can give you without being there:

1. Version 5.2. (something)
2. Three Terminals, all defined terminal settings as Term1, Term2, Term3
3. Two of the terminals are Windows 2000 and one is XP
4. All the terminals connect and are mapped to the server
5. Each Terminal works as long as another one is not already on

Another question is, do the terminals have to be mapped to each other, or do they only need to be mapped to the BOH?

No mapped network drives other than z to \\alohaboh\bootdrv

Most likely the problem you are having is caused by the Aloha drive on the terminals not being shared. Share the drive Aloha is installed on as bootdrv with full access rights. Be sure the share is set to allow others to change files and folders as well.

Ok, I did that and I went ahead and put XP Pro on there. I still can't get them up. I can only have one Terminal up at a time, any other ideas?

I assume for the most part everything is fine because the printers and cash drawers are working properly when their respective terminal is up. Thanks again in advance for your advice.

Delete the "debout" files from each of the terminals. (c:\aloha\tmp\debout.*)Restart them one at a time. Patse the contents of the new debugging files back here starting with the "master" followed by the other 2.

Under the Aloha TMP Directory on the file server delete the EXITING file if there is one there. After that see if all the terminals will come up. Also check and see if the file EXITING comes back C:\ALOHA\TMP\EXITING

The exiting marker file as listed above is an issue. Remove it from the fileserver.

Create a batch file (notepad but save as .bat not .txt). In notepad type the following, "if exist c:\aloha\tmp\exiting del c:\aloha\tmp\exiting". Place this in startup on each terminal.

Be sure the "termstr" is the same on all terminals. (In ibercfg.bat) It is a good idea to have the termstr followed by the term number (term= in ibercfg.bat)used as the computer name on each terminal. (if the termstr=fred and term=2 name the computer fred2 )

Be sure the termstr in the environment variables on the fileserver matches that on the terminals.

Be sure the LANA number assigned to the NIC on each terminal as well as the fileserver is 0 (zero). There is no GUI for that in XP so you will have to use a 3rd party app. lanacfg.exe is on the Aloha install disk and will work. Call the app from a command prompt and sue the showlanapaths command. "c:\lanacfg.exe showlanapaths"

I see XP SP1 is on the terminals. If the fileserver is running SP2 be sure the Windows firewall is disabled.

Be sure no software based firewall is running on the fileserver or any terminals.

Disable DHCP Media Sense on the fileserver and all terminals. (this is not the problem but will cause headaches if not done)

You should unflag the fifo buffers on any com ports driving Aloha printers.
