Hi,

I'm new to the forum and not sure if this the right place to post, apologies if not. At work, we use flukes to test patch cabinet cables to see if there is a pc at the other end of the cable. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent tool to detect a telephone?

This would be helpful in situations where people have moved office, but their patch cables have been left in the cabinet end.

thanks in advance

Dan

real easy to dectect an analog set, that has a capacitor across the far end. we use an old simpsom analog meter, ohm test them reverse poliarty, you'll see the cap bleed down. the needle starts down slow then kicks back up, the spike from the cap causes that.. digital sets are dependant on maker... a cat 5 cable tested will see either type of station, you'll see a far end anomolie (spelling) caused by either type station.. fluke also makes those. they are good enough to tell you the length of the cable to the tenth of an inch and if the jack is wired correctly

A FEW YEARS AGO, OK A LOT OF YEARS AGO BEFORE THE DIGITAL TELEPONE AND ELECTRONIC RINGERS YOU COULD TAKE A ANALOG VOM AND PLACE IT ACROSS THE TIP AND RING AND FLIP BETWEEN 100,000 AND 10,000 OHMS AND YOU COULD SEE THE CAPACITOR FROM THE RINGER.
NOW A DAYS FORGET IT

HEY JOHN YOU AS OLD AS I AM

OLD ROLMEN WORKING ON NORTELS

wouldnt a plain old continutiy tester do it ?

if there is a phone plugged in conity if not no

something with a light

hmm... Im going to try it tommorrow ,seems like it should work though

continuity test dosnet work , tried it on both system phone and 2500

on 2500 it lights when I pick up the handset off course DUH !! hook completes the loop [dazed]

I did just get a new tester, I will check it this week to see if it can detect. If so, I will let you know, I got it at graybar.

Cheers for the response guys. I've managed to use a fluke to detect digital phones, but I haven't managed to get it to work with an analog phone.

If you use a TDR you might be able to learn what the signature looks like for a particlar type of line.

You certainly shoul dbe able to recognize an open, assuming the phone looks different from that when on hook you might be able to learn to tell the difference.

Not a go/no go tester though. Good luck.

reverse the leads on the fluke, after a test with leads normal. you will see the charged capacitor.. testing normal for ohms charges the cap to your meter battery voltage, that voltage will not bleed down for maybe 2 seconds.. another way, the one i use now, connect a ringer in series with one side of the line, call the number. because that ringer is in series, it will not ring unless a set is plugged into the far end to complete the ckt.. that takes a little time but it is a no fail test

John,

" connect a ringer in series with one side of the line, call the number. "

Apologies for my ignorance (I'm fairly new to telecoms). How would I go about doing this?

Do I connect a telephone handset? How do I connect it in series? Bear in mind I don't know the number at the far end.

thanks

If you have a butt set, you could first clip on and ID the number (by calling something like 1-800-444-4444, or your cell phone and look at the caller id display), then disconnect ONE side of the jumper leading to the station. Connect one of your butt set leads to the hanging wire, connect the other butt set lead to the terminal where you took the wire off of. Put your butt set on "talk" and call the number from your cell phone. If there is a phone on the far end, you will hear the ringing voltage in your butt set.

Be sure to put the jumper back when you're done.

he hit it, i use a ringer box, a simple analog set will work. i know the dn because i can print it from my switch. i disconect the tip (top) side of the jumper, connect one lead to the jumper the other to the pin i just pulled it off of. then call the number. if the line is open (no phone) the phone i just connected will not ring.. if a set or modem is on the far end, that completes the ckt and my test phone rings.. a butt set will work and so would a neon (90 volt) lamp.. msg waiting lights were great testers at one time...
