My desktop taskbar has stopped responding, I have searched on Google and the experts suggest all kinds of Mickey Mouse fixes but none of the ones I have tried actually worked.

Is there a solution or is the latest update another pile of wotsits churned out by MS?

Keith

Can you elaborate on the issue and what have you tried from these other experts.

I did a system scan and that showed nothing wrong.
They suggest removing and restoring all the windows apps - that sounds like they have no clue what the problem is.
Create a new account - how on earth could that ever solve any problem?

Keith

The taskbar is another explorer process.

ctrl-alt-del

get the task manager. Kill off explorer, windows+r type explorer to create a new explorer.

Might be worth switching on "Launch folder windows in a separate process

Restarting the box restores the functionality but the taskbar can stop working at any time after that.
Some days it works all day while other days it stops several times, very annoying.

It sounds like they suspect a problem with the registry. Creating a new user creates new entries for the registry. Each user has some NTUser.dat files that are loaded when the user logs in. These tend to get corrupted. I see this way too often.

Further investigation has revealed that the cause is Windows Explorer stopping.
Running task manager gives the option of restarting it and then all is well.
If I had a car that did that I would take it to the dealer for it to be fixed.

Ok, have you changed your view from Quick View to This PC:
(fixes a number of explorer crashes for me)

Also my PC is MUCH less buggy since I started to run PIROFORM's CCleaner (the free version) once a week. It does a great job cleaning up the registry. Only download the one from There are other download sites but many of them are hacked versions. I am not affiliated with Piroform in anyway, just a very satisfied customer.

Thanks to hairlessupportmonkey for the mention of opening Explorer to "This PC" - hadn't yet noticed that, and at least at times, that's what I'd prefer anyway.

My taskbar is stopping again, for no apparent reason.
I can restart Windows Explorer and everything is OK for a while.
Has anyone any clue what is causing Windows Explorer to close down?

Keith

Entry in Event Viewer
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
and APPID
{9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable).
This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I suspect the problem is caused by running Filezilla but the question is, how to fix it.
The associated fixing tools and help guides appear to have been written by aliens.

Keith

Running as administrator kills the taskbar too.
The guy at Filezilla suggests that something in Windows is corrupted and suggests a reinstall.
I need to get a drive to copy all my data to in case the whole thing goes pear shaped, that is a job for this next week.

Keith

I have seen it suggested to change permissions of a couple of registry keys in AppID.
One key being - {9CA88EE3-ACB7-47c8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
I tried to change the permissions but even under admin user, it could not be changed for some reason.

Keith

If it is a Windows issue, and it sounds probable at this point, you could try:
[ol 1][li]from DOS prompt: sfc /scannow[/li]
[li]If you've had the issue from day one, or after an update, or after new hardware installation, perhaps try checking drivers[/li]
[li]Revert to a restore point likely before first issue occurence[/li]
[li]If that bears no fruit, you could try running a repair install of Windows, keeping everything intact[/li]
[/ol]

Each of those should take less time and be less destructive than a full reinstall.

Of course, in the end, if it is a Windows issue, a reinstall should fix it.

Thanks
I have run a repair install and although the computer is now going faster I am still having issues with explorer, in fact it is worse now than it was before the repair.
When you say checking drivers, what am I checking for?
