I just installed IE7. When I click on my deskstop internet shortcuts the browser starts to open and then hangs and says "Connecting" and the web page never loads. Any suggestions on a fix?
I thought smah's suggestion fixed it, but I was premature in reaching that conclusion. I find that as long as the browser is open in the "add-on disabled" mode, it works. But when I close the browser and try the desktop shortcuts, they still won't work. I even tried going through and manually disabling all of the add-ons, but that did not fix it either. One would think the two actions (the add-on disabled mode and disabling each of the individually) would be equivalent. I went to Microsoft's website and found nothing about this. It is probably something simple. I know how to uninstall IE7, but where do I find IE6 now? On the Microsoft site, there's a service pack for IE6 - is that the right download?
Uninstalling IEf 7.0 using the control panel will revert you back to IE 6.0. Then go to Windows Update and make sure that your IE 6.0 is fully patched.
If it only works while in add-on's disabled mode, you need to find which add-on is causing the problem. The only way to do this is by trial & error, one at a time
Unless I missed something along the way,I thought I was doing that. I followed the directions and disabled everything under each of the four categories. My thought was to enable them one at a time until I found the troublemaker. But, even with them all disabled, I still had the problem. That makes no sense to me since I would have thought that would have been equivalent to opening the browser in add-on disabled mode.
Here's a new twist to the story. In the past few minutes I checked Google Groups, and following advice there, I downloaded an update to Google Desktop. That SEEMS to have fixed the problem. Go figure. I didn't think I had Google Desktop on my PC, but the shortcuts seem to be working now. Is this stuff so complicated now that nobody really knows what is going on? Thanks for the help.
