O.k, i changed my desktop icons, using the Customize Desktop Option in Windows, but when i reboot, the icons revert to the Windows Defaults? Any ideas Why this is happening? I've tried rebuilding the cache, but it doesn't work. Before i reinstalled Windows it worked Fine, but now with the new reinstall they keep changing back when i reboot.

hey I had a similar problem.....windows defaults to only saving 200 folder settings...I changed those settings and it did not fix the total problem I was having....the first fix on the link I am posting fixed the problem
* a side benefit from the first fix seems to speed up my computer somewhat*

this is the Microsoft link that explains the 200 folder problem and the fix

wish you luck

I wasn't talking about general folders. I meant the My PC, My Docuemtns, My Network Places Icons, that you can change, by right clicking on your desktop selecting properties then selectiong the Desktop tab, then customize Desktop. I change them there but when i reboot the icons revert back to the Windows Defaults.
I have not changed any icons for the folders or anything.

Are you using XP on a home system or are you in a corporate environement with Acive Directory? If the latter, you are subject to the AD administrator who is overriding your settings. If the first, try logging-on as the system admin and make your changes.

its a home system, and i am the administrator. There is no reason as to why its reverting back.

Thanx for the Help any way.

I too have a similar issue, the trash can icon looks like a normal file folder. I'd tried to change it to a custom icon and then it didnt work for mor than one boot, and now I cant even get the standard icon to work.

There are no active policies that would prevent saving user settings. Besides it does save the wallpaper and other settings such as the appearance, and the Icon positiions, it just the actuall Icons images it doesn't like.

BTW, when I booted up today it seemed it had kept the settings but 1 minute into the session the icons reverted back.

Its getting really annoying

Thanks for any advice.

Corrupt Profile? Have you tried as another user?

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

I have tried it with another profile. and the same thing happens. Also there is no previous restore point, because this is a new installation its barely a day old.

Thanks

Is it a clean install after a format or a repair install of XP, or an upgrade from an earlier 9x system?

It's a clean install, after a Format. The only things i've installed so far, are, Microsoft Office, and Norton.

Check to see if Norton isn't reverting to a saved point because it thinks something is wrong with the changes. (like an automatic restore point). You said there is no reason why it is reverting, I beg to differ.

I checked, but I could'nt find anywhere in Norton where it could possibly be generating restore points. Besides I dont think its a restore point, because everything else stays the same. except those 3 pesky icons.

Any more dieas are very much apreciated.
