desktop icons not appearing

i got windows xp home edition and when i start none of the icons or shortcuts appear (including my computer, my documents, etc) and i can add shortcuts and they wont appear. Played around with display settings with no success.

right-click on your desktop and in the menu under 'Arrange Icons' make sure that 'Show desktop icons' is checked....if not click it
