Can anyone tell me how to automatically replace an application shortcut Icon, when updating the application, in the same position as it was before the update took place??

Here's a partial answer since I don't know what application you upgraded...

I use a small program that saves the position of the desktop icons and at bootup, places them back in the original position. I just place a shortcut to the restoreicons.exe file in my startup group.

Good luck :)
