When I log into windows I now have a duplicate copy of my desktop over the top of the working one, it is just like an image so I cannot use it for anything but a solid hand appears over it (same as if you were over a link for something), I can move it out the way to get the the working desktop behind but cannot get rid of it, it used to just appear as a very small window but has now taken over copying the entire screen.

Can anyone Help???? ...PLEASE

I have tried refreshing, using Norton System Works and Spybot to find anything but still hasn't resolved it. ???

A strange one to say the least, maybe this fix mentioned here will have some effect.

Does pressing ESC have any effect?

How are you able to move it out of the way? Is it within a window that you can drag?

Is there anything funny listed in Msconfig that is starting up when you log on?

Can you explain this comment a bit further, "a solid hand appears over it (same as if you were over a link for something)"? Are you using Shared folders, is your Desktop folder in your username shared somehow?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

You are the second person this week to report this odd behavior, see: thread779-635311

Download a newer version of SpyBot Search and Destroy (uninstall the old version first).
In addition, run Hijack This!
A good source for both:
Finally, update your Norton Anti-Virus definitions, and do a complete scan.

Hi the hand that appears is the same as appears when i place the cursor over the link for google you gave.

Pressing Esc does nothing, it has a blank blue title bar as if it is a window, i can move it by clicking on the bar and dragging it out the way, I havnt found anything that stands out in any lists.

When i click on the copied window it seems to refresh and so if i have moved anything on the normal desktop it refreshes to match it, as if taking a picture of whats there.

It is basically like a screen grab and copies whatever is shown on the desktop then displays that in its own window infront of the real desktop, i can only move it by click and dragging its blank title bar, i can resize it or bring anything up or do anything with it except for dragging it out the way??

I dont really have a clue when it comes to looking at in depth running files i.e dll or what should be there or what shouldnt, i have run spybot and norton but it still stays???

I just stopped CCAPP.EXE running Task Manager Processes and the window has now minimised to a small rectangle, its still the same sort of window just a lot smaller now??

[ ] about the size of the but standing up?

Try this: Hit Ctrl+alt+delete and get Task Manager

Go to the processes tab and find explorer.exe, click on it, and then on "end process", agree to the warning. Your desktop icons and taskbar will disappear - don't panic.

Click on the applications tab, click on "new task", type in explorer.exe and hit ok to restart the desktop.

Does it go away? If so, then the problem is your video drivers. They need to be updated or reinstalled.

The other possibility is a virus or trojan. Try an online virus scan:
No one anti-virus or anti-trojan tool captures everything, and only the newest definitions installed for any of these programs will catch the newer problems and their variants.

CCAPP.EXE is part of your Anti Virus Software. It may be possible that it is conflicting with something else you are running. It may also be possible it that it has become corrupted.

Have a read of these links and then contact Norton and see what light they can throw on the subject.

Anothing thing to look at is a proper Anti Trojan program and scan for Trojans too. You could download the trial version of TDS-3 and run it over your system just to see what it finds.

While your there have a look at Port Explorer too. This program is dowloaded for trial use. It is very good for problems with "hidden windows" caused by Trojans.

Hi I tried the explorer.exe thing and it still remained, I also tried the HouseCall virus checker and nothing.

I know it was said that it was probably a video problem if it went when i stopped explorer.exe running, although it remained I have been having problems playing videos through media player 9 or DivX and Quicktime, all I get is a black screen while it plays, is it possible that the two are linked?

PS Thanks to everyone for their help so far.

PS I also doesnt always appear to be on the screen, im not sure if it just stops now and then or i am just unable to see it.

Start, run, dxdiag

If there is a video issue this will show it. You should then download and apply new video drivers. I know there was a flurry of problems with newer drivers from nVidia in the last two weeks.
