Deskjet printer shuts off

When I turn my HP DeskJet 420 printer on, it moves the ink cartridge back and forth a few times and then shuts off. It used to work in the same system configuration.

Are any of the LED's on the printer lit? If so, are they steady or flashing -- what color are they -- and what is the notation (if any) beside the LED or LED's?

Only the green power light flashes during the period the ink cartridge is moving back and forth. Then all stop - power shuts off including the flashing power light.
