In our company we have Windows 2000 Workgroup. We are thinking of moving to domain model. Now my company website and mail server is hosted on third party server. Our windows 2000 server also act as gateway for the network. We have permanent internet connection through this server. I am confused little bit about how to configure my domain server and DNS. Because I think if I name my domain as xyz.com wouldn't it will clash with other IP address that our third party uses to host our site. When we move to domain model we are also thinking of hosting mail server locally.

It will be best to create two separate zones for such a network. You already have a public presence xyz.com. When you go to w2k create xyz.local. That way, you don't ever have to worry about the public accessing you network. Like the 192.168..., the IETF recognize xyz.local as a private network, and it will not be available on the internet. Or, you can create a subdomain of the xyz.com domain and create a separate database for it. for example private.xyz.com. I hope this can start pointing you in the right direction.
