How do you make sure machines are not included in SMS pool even though they sit within subnets that are included. Does this make sense?

OK my fault .. bit new to this. We are just about to roll out SMS in a single site to three subnets. Within one of these subnets I have 3 machines that we do not want SMS to be installed upon. As we have enabled automatic installation I via logon on and network discovery I wondered if there was somewhere where I can add machine names or IP addresses that are ignored by SMS and left out.

Hope this makes it a little clearer!

There are two ways, one dont include that subnet in a boundary, and secondly On the SMS 2003 Site Server, open the registry editor.

Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_DISCOVERY_DATA_MANAGER\ExcludeServers

Under the ExcludeServers subkey, enter each computer name you want to exclude, each on a separate line.

Close the registry editor

woops I was thinking 2003

just put in a 0 byte file called MS with no extention on the win root

That would be on the client so c:\winnt\ms

and if it has a client run 20clicln.bat /scrub then delete it off the all systems directory in the admin console and your good to go.

Ok so I've but a o byte file in thanks a lot. Out of interest why does this work!

because sms wants to put a folder called MS in the windows/winnt dir and if there is a 0 byte file called ms it can't cause it already exists :)
