I want to create a task with a fixed end date, and a start date determined by the end date of a predecessor. In other words, the start date and duration will vary each time the predecessor end date changes, but the end date will stay the same. I can't seem to get duration to be a variable. I enter a finish date, no duration or start date, then assign a predeccesor F-S and no lag, then various combinations of settings under the Task Information > Advanced tab and none seem to work (duration always appears as a fixed value). Any suggestions?

Double-click the task that has the fixed end date.
Click on the "advanced" tab
Set "Constraint Type" to "Must Finish On"
Set "Constraint Date" to the date it must finish on.
Click on OK

Link the tasks.

Try again.

Create a blank project with two tasks and do as I instructed. it will work.

You have some other issue (actual work already recorded? scheduling from the finish date? others?) that are giving you the problem.

You have presented your question; I have given you a solution that works. If it's not working then you haven't described your problem fully and correctly.

i tried it again and it worked, i just forgot to set the constraint date
