Ok here's the scenario:

Have a Novell 4.11 server which is being replaced by a Windows 2003 server. Currently we are running Exchange 2k which serves as the PDC and Exchange all on one box. We are looking to migrate the Novell > Win 2k3 while also integrating it with the current E2K box. I have been told to join the new Win 2K3 box to the E2K domain then demote the E2K box and promote the Win 2K3 box. IS this even possible? Thanks in advance for the input!

Hi owentropy,

depending on how you plan to migrate your netware 4.11 users, here's how you would do it with a new separate win2k3 box:

first you need to extend the AD schema for the forest by using adprep /forestprep from your win2k3 CD on your existing win2k/e2k box. Then do the same again for the domain with command adprep /domain.
Now you can join your new win2k3 box to your AD as a DC. once your win2k3 box is setup as a DC in the domain you need to transfer the FSMO roles using AD Domains and Trusts (for the domain naming master) and AD users and computers for the rest.
Once the FSMO roles have been transfered you and your win2k3 server is set to be a global catalog server you should be ok to demote your win2k/e2k box to be just a member/standalone server.

Be aware that exchange 2k cannot run on a win2k3 server so if you plan on upgrading the win2k box to win2k3 you need to upgrade e2k to exchange 2k3.

hope that helps,

cheers,

Richie.
