I have a question on Demoting a Windows 2000 DC.
We have 2 DC. One is Windows 2000 (DC2000) and the other is Windows 2003 (Win2003DC1).
Our Windows 2000 server goes down. We promote another Windows 2003 (called Win2003DC2) to be DC.
Eventually, I run the registry fix on Windows 2000 server and it boots up fine. Some of the sectors on the drive is corrupted. The Windows 2000 server still held the Infrastructure role and global catalog. So, I transfer the Infrastructure role to Win2003DC2. Unathorize the DHCP on Windows 2000 server and uninstall DNS.
I see some error on replication from and to the Windows 2000 server. I plan to demote the Windows 2000 server. The only role it is holding now is Global Catalog.
Here are the error I got after Win2000DC crashes. I receive the same error even I manage to get it back up. Looks like the database on Windows 2000 is corrupted.
Should I take out the Global Catalog from the Windows 2000 server first? Then demote it by running DCpromo. After that, enable Global Catalog on Win2003DC2.
From Win2003DC1 Event 13508
The File Replication Service is having trouble enabling replication from DC2000 to Win2003DC1 for c:\windows\sysvol\domain using the DNS name DC2000.domain.com. FRS will keep retrying.
Following are some of the reasons you would see this warning.
