Hello,

I've been searching the web for several hours trying to find an answer to this simple question with no luck but I did discover this forum during my search so I'm hoping someone here can answer my question.

I can't afford to buy the pro version of Delphi 6 but I have an opportunity to buy the standard edition of Delphi 4 pretty cheap but I need to know, can I commercially distribute apps written with it or is it like the personal edition of Delphi 6 which is essentially a learning edition?

If anyone has the answer please reply quickly as the store only has 1 copy left :) .

Thanks.

Somebody selling you the standard edition of Delphi 4? That must be real cheap, because the official price was $100, actually these editions are now give away items.

With the standard edition you can make comercial programs, depending on the type of program.
You can not modify the standard components because the source code is not included. Client-Server programs, forget it, web applications, don't even think of it.
You will have support for paradox, dbase and acces tables.

The price class of delphi:
Standard $100, Pro $1000 and enterprise $3000

Thanks for the replies. I'm just a hobbyist who writes game programs so the feature limitations of the standard edition wont be a problem for me.

The offer is for Delphi 4 Standard sealed retail box for $30. I feel that's a pretty good price. The free version of Delphi 4 that they're giving away in books and magazine cover disks I understand has a different license turning it into a learning edition, that is you can't sell anything you write with it.

Thanks for the link Svanhooft but that's exactly the version I don't want :). It's a personal edition, you can't commercially distribute any apps you write with it.

The cheapest price I've seen for Delphi 6 with commercial distribution license which is the pro version is $945!

By the way, I'm not in love with version 4, it's just the only version that allows you to sell your apps that I could find at a reasonable price. Delphi 5 seems to have completely disappeared.

Thanks again,
Gus.

I think it depends on where you are.

In the Uk I bought one of the last copies of D4 Std to be sold with a distribution Licence.

Magazine copies are usually limited licences as you suggest.

To be honest I think Borlands licencing / pricing policy has become unreasonable recently. Even a small company will find it hard to justify the cost of a new version of Delphi with a distribution Licence. As I do.

Steve.
