I just setup a brand new Dell Optiplex 280. It was not yet attached to the Internet, and upon installing our antivirus program, a boot sector virus was found. This leads me to the obvious conclusion that Dell's image for this model might be tainted. The antivirus program could not repair it. I installed Norton, which stated the boot sector was clean (didn't suprise me, I have seen Norton miss these before), so I reinstalled the original antivirus, downloaded the updates, and it removed the infection no problem. It did not identify the name of the virus, but it did find the infection in the boot sector. The product was ViRobot. Obviously, the only way to be sure would be for other users of this model to check their machines, which its not very likely anyone who reads this thread will have. But I figured its worth a shot, and a heads up to other administrators to keep this in mind. I have reported the issue to Dell.
