A Dell Monitor E173FPf running on WinXP shows full screen pages in rotating colors when Windows shuts down: pink, green, purple, etc.... but will not power off. The system sometimes locks up and has to be rebooted but I have to unplug and replug the monitor's power for a good reboot.

I'm wondering monitor problem?? or video card problem??

Anyone experience anything like this, or have any ideas for me?

Thanks.

Those screens usually only last for 30 seconds or so. Have you looked for a setting in the OSD controls to turn that display off or to set the monitor back to default settings?

How does the system lock up exactly? When shutting down?

Does the system still lock up when you click shut down and unplug the monitor? That is, does the monitor affect the lockup issue? I suspect there's a video card issue going on.

I have resolved the system locking up problem, but the monitor will still not allow me to power it off. When Windows is active, the monitor displays normally. When Windows is shutdown, I must unplug the monitor to turn it off. Also, even simply plugged into the wall, not connected to a computer, the monitor displays never ending rotating colors in full-screen size.

I have ruled out the video card because when I put a different monitor on the system, it works normally.

There are only three tiny button on the lower front right panel next to the power button of the monitor in question. None of them bring up any menus. Is there a hold sequence I'm suppose to use the get a ODS reset?

Many thanks for your responses.

It sounds like there's a hardware failure with your monitor. The failure may be holding pins on the cable in the wrong state causing your PC to hang or lock up.

As for the OSD, there should be a single button push that brings up the menu. On my Dell monitors it has a picture that looks like a window with writing on it.

If you want to just buy another one I found the same model online for $85.

I was afraid this is where I was headed with this monitor. I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything simple that might resolve the power off issue rather than buying a new monitor but, it happens.

Thanks Jeff and others for your help.
