I need assistance identifying the harddrive for a Dell Lattitude D800. The ones available are either ATA or SATA. I don't know the difference. Avoiding calling Dell- I hate the 20 questions just to get one piece of info.
This is a 4.5 year old machine and has a 60 gig w/ 7200 spin speed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

According to the online manual at Dell.com. Your laptop has an EIDE/ATA interface for hard drives. which means you need an EIDE/ATA hard drive. NOT SATA. The difference is mainly the interface, the drives themselves are pretty much the same thing.
However the interface is not, and as such cannot be plugged in to EIDE/ATA or viceversa.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Thanks:
I searched online and could not find that info. Can you post up the url to that page please?

Thanks,

Doug

You only need to put in the TAG number of your Laptop and it will tell how it was built when shipped.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Thanks guys!
I have a follow-up question. I ordered a drive and it ended being the wrong type. I have an ATA/IDE drive and the one I got was an Enhanced IDE. I was advised not to use the Enhanced IDE, it uses to much battery power.

But, my current drive is 7200 rpm and they have stopped making 7200 rpm drives and 5400 rpm drives are only available now. How much performance difference is there between the two spin speeds? I can find a 7200 rpm, but for $170 and 100 GB where I can get a 160 GB for $70, same manufacturer, Hitatchi.

Thanks,

Doug

Not too much, negligible really. As for IDE vs. EIDE, read this:

EIDE came out in 1994 as a proprietary name for WD's new tech. I have never heard of it using more battery than IDE, in fact I've heard the terms were interchangeable. Maybe someone will step forth and correct me.

All IDE drive use to be 5400 and then they came out with the 7200, but they where noisier and had a high failure rate so they have gone back to 5400.

I wouldn't worry about the battery unless you run only on the battery all the time. I doubt if there is much difference between them.
