Dell Inspiron 1525 Problems 2

Okay so i've had this laptop for some time now and whenever i turn it on I get an error saying "Checking file system on C: . The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is OS. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is recommended that you continue."

If i hit cancel, windows starts up normally until i get to my desktop. I can click the stuff on my desktop but it never loads up, regardless of what i click. I also can't hit anything by the time at the bottom or the Start Menu.

Any ideas of what i should try? I want to just restart everything but I don't know how to do that...

Let the computer do a scan of your hard drive at bootup. It sounds like your Hard Drive is going bad and may have bad sectors. You'll probably need to get a new hard drive in the near future.

Get the Ultimate Boot CD (free) or download the manufacturer's hard drive utility directly to check it. You can figure out the HDD brand by going into the BIOS.

Don't fool around - your drive could be on the edge of failure. Copy your data elsewhere NOW and then diagnose the problem.

A CHKDSK should only run periodically/rarely after improper shutdowns. Any more than that and you should smell trouble.

Also I can't get on the internet with the laptop.. so there's no way for me to download the hard drive utility

How are you getting on line to post this? Use the computer you are using to download either the drive manufacturers diagnostic tool or the Ultimate Boot CD. Both will let you create a bootable CD you can use to run the utility without involving Windows.

Can you boot into safe mode?

Why don;t you let it continue with the Disk check when it prompts you for it?

On a different computer. and Okay I will try that.

Yes, I can boot into safe mode but the same thing happens.. the desktop loads and then shortly after the screen freezes and i can't click anything. Sometimes i can move the mouse.

I did several times, the same exact thing happens.

Let the system complete the disk check. It may take a while, but when it's done, you'll get a message giving you the status of the disk. Note carefully what it says - you probably will not be able to print screen or clipboard it.

The disk check is NOT going to help if there is an underlying problem whether you let it finish or not. Take this very seriously if you have any data on there.

I've tried the disk check multiple times.. it doesnt help and takes like 15 minutes..

I have had 2 of these very same laptops doing the same thing, both had bad hard drives, just as well order a new drive. If I remember right, both hard drives were Toshiba.

Well I want to see if I can fix it before I just go and buy a new hard drive...

I've download the Ultimate Boot CD Builder. Are there any extra things that I should put onto the .iso? Or just the regular things that came with it?

Things that came with UBCD will check your drive quite well

go to bottom of the page, choose a mirror, and click the little box with the down pointing arrow. This will get you the .iso image, then you need something like imgburn to burn the image, or if you have windows 7 it can create the cd from the tools it has.

Assuming all the fine gentlemen above have already helped you, but incase you are having troubles burning UBCD:

Easiest way for me to burn ISO:
Download imgburn:

Install by following onscreen instructions
Download Ultimate Boot CD .ISO file:

Open imgburn and click on the first icon that says "Write image file to disc",
Top left corner says "Source" "Please select a file" with a folder and a magnifying glass - click that folder
Search to where you downloaded the .ISO file for UBCD and choose it
Bottom left corner is a button that looks like a piece of paper with a CD on it and an arrow pointing to a CD - click it

Wait for it to get done and boot off of it.

Making sure your Optical/DVD drive is the first boot device:
Power on the PC and hit "F2" or "ESC" or whatever gets you into BIOS. It should prompt onscreen what to hit.
Depending on what BIOS you're using, there will be a section that says "Boot device order" or "Boot priority", make sure "Optical Drive" is at the top of that list and doesn't have an "!" by it which signifies it's being skipped. Try to boot off of the UBCD.
