Just upgraded my old laptop from windows 95 to 98SE.
It has/had a Dell external PCMCIA cd rom drive which worked fine under windows 95.
I tried to install the dos drivers and changed my config.sys file to show the ATAK365.sys driver for the laptop.
Kept getting errors, so I gave up and brought an IDE adapter and connected my laptop hard drive to desktop and copied accross my cab files and installed 98SE no problems.
It found my PCMCIA card and installed the driver, no conficts, irq 9,10,11 all ok.
It also installed my PCMCIA network card no problems networks fine, internet sharing all a ok.
However in my computer there is no D: drive, I have tried various device=atak.sys/d:mscd000 commonds on the scsci line in the properties of the pcmcia card.
Since I installed using cab files from hard drive, is there a registry tweak I need to add to the Local_Machince Key ?
Any help most greatful ?
Digital Ultra Hinote II laptop, Dell exteranl CDR rom, using atak365.sys, atamgr.sys, and atamini.sys, with the .inf file ujdb120.inf ?

Is your computer made by Dell, if so contact their technical support 1-800-847-4096 (you can only use this number if your computer was bought from Dell).

If not, then you can probably still use the dell pcmcia card. Go to or to update your driver for that device. [cheers]

Have tried searching there knowlede base and support site, no joy, cannot find driver.
Windows 98 has seen the device and there is no conflicts, its just the "windows" enviroment dosnt see a cd rom, it cannot associate the scsi pcmcia adpter as a cd rom, is there a way to adjust start and stop letters in a portable enviroment, as when i click on hard drive it has just the box to tick for removable, and no stop start letters box.
could this be the cause ?

Try removing the device in the device manager, then remove the card, re-start, then shut-down, put in card, re-start, and windows hardware should pop up, and install it automatically.

That might help, give it a shot. [cheers]

do you see the c.d. icon in "my computer"? Is there a drive letter assigned?

If not goto device manager (right-click my computer) and
select the Device Manager Tab.
Then select cd-rom and change the (plus sign) to (negative sign) and click on your brand of cd-rom.
Then click proerties near the bottom of the window, that will open the properties for your cd-rom.
Then click on the settings tab, and assign a drive letter, if that hasn't been done already. Make sure the start drive letter, and the end drive letter are the same. Then re-start.

I've encountered this problem before with my friend's laptop, can't quite remember how we did it, but I think that this has something to with it.

Let me know your outcome [cheers]

Thats my bigest problem , I have not got a cd rom icon in MY COMPUTER?
So i cannot add a drive letter to it, However I do have the SCSI controller (pcmcia adpater card IRQ 9) which the cd rom is attathed to in device ,manager.
In settings there is the box saying if your scsi controller needs a command type here, I have tried
Device=atak365.sys/d:mscd000
and vairous other commands to try and tell windows this is the cd rom ?

hmmmmmmm...

Don't know what to say, I'm out of suggestions right now!

If your network card works, then I asume that your PCMCIA bay is fine, but is there some kind of problem with the Dell card.

Tell me, did you remove and insert the cd card alot? Could be somethin wrong with it (still a possibility, even though it worked fine before)

Try calling Dell tech support (seeing a s how it is a dell product they may be able to help you and or point you in the direction of getting a proper updated driver.)(Worth a try)

Other than that, I'm afraid I can't help. Sorry. [cheers]

razled,
I'm sifting through a 1766 page Resource Kit manual for WIN 98, looking for some clues. I've never dealt with an external SCSI drive. The manual is pointing towards the SCSI bus configuration and two files you can look at--IOS.log and IOS.ini. These files might give you a clue to the failure. It also mentioned setting up the drive to just work under MS-DOS, as a test procedure. If any of this is useful or you think it's heading in the right direction, I'll try to scan whatever you need to make things clearer than I am:)
I'll continue to check back thru the night as I am just finishing up the other "beast" from before. That was a real horror. The HD was really effected by the BIOS crash.

Try posting this same question in the Windows 98 forum. There are some people who give a lot of good advice there. Try it out.

When I mentioned that my friend had this same problem, we just removed it from the device manager and let the hardware wizard figure it out. Then it worked. So I haven't seen your EXACT problem, but one similar.

So my last piece of advice is to post this in Windows 98 forum. [deejay]

DellComputerUser,
That might be the best place for an answer to this one. It seems WIN 98 looks at things a bit different than WIN 95, even though it can use the same drivers. I just through my 2-cents in from my book, to at least give another direction. However, I t doesn't look like a hardware trouble, more like an OS trouble.

Thanks chaps, will contact Dell suport and Copy this to the windows forum, I have just invested in a "BIGALOW" hardback hardware "trouble shooting guide" it seems to have quite a good write up for scsi devices, so thats the third line of fire.
Once again thanks, I will keep you all posted.

have just looked in control panel, and I have the pcmcia service control box but no scsi control box, I have however a box label odbc source 7 boxes, user dsn, syste, dsn, file dsn, drivers, tracing, connection pooling, about,
Do i do anything with this ! never seen this before ?
