My old DELL Dimension desktop has given me years of good service. Today the DVD drive refused to stay closed either with or without a disk in it. Pushing the control button retracts the slide but after 1 or 2 seconds the slide ejects. The drive light flashes while the tray is in.

You could remove the data cable from the drive, which would stop eject commands being issued to the drive. It's clutching at straws, but it might be malware.

Failing that, you can strip the drive down, give it a clean and put it back together again; otherwise you'll need to replace it.

Usually the drive is defective, needs to be replaced.
