does that suggest motherboard problem? I was in the process of imaging the machine when I found this problem. I use ghost and I could'nt type the session name in. I hooked up a usb keyboard and it wouldnt work with ghost, but the usb mouse would. Anyone have any ideas

Is Windows currently installed on the Dell's HDD?

Remove all cards & connected devices (unless no onboard gfx) except for (1) stick RAM & CPU, try to get into BIOS & have a look around, make sure PS/2 is enabled. Make sure it's not something basic like NumLock On. Try other keyboards, both PS/2 & USB.

I googled Dell C530 and found only Kodak cameras...is this a laptop, desktop or server?

Its a desktop. I've tried other keyboards (both usb and ps/2). When I boot up with a ps/2 keyboard I get keyboard failure error..If I reboot and use a usb keyboard it works fine.
