Dell 1.7mhz 256 ram seems to be SLOW
- AVG and ZoneAlarm running

any suggestions

Thx

1) Check with task manager how much memory each process is using. It is possible that something is hogging all the memory and the system is spenfing all its time paging.
2) Do you have a network card with no network? If so, disable the network card. It is possibly looking outside the box. Also make sure the PATH does not have any networked drives. It really kills the system if it does.

No idea what zone alarm does. AVG will take up some time but it is normally about 5%.

Check the total paging file in use (also in task manager) - if its more than 256MB you need to either invest in more memory or run less programs (do you have lots running at startup? - something like autoruns from would help you check this out and stop apps you don't need to be running at start).

Zone Alarm is a bit of a hog nowadays (and its monitoring interferes with other apps) - so may be part of the cause.
Might be worth trying another - Kerio and Outpost used to be free, but no longer, though there is a copy of free Outpost here
Also, you may have some spyware onboard - I'd run spybot, adaware and AVG (was Ewido) scans.

If using XP you'll notice quite a bit of improvement out of at least an additional 256MB.
