What is the best way to delete Columns from a Table with Merged cells without altering the Table layout in Word 2003?

Hdesk

Highlight the cells in the column and delete cells

or

split the table below the merged cells, delete the column and re-join the table.

A tip for the future:

Never, ever use merged cells. Most Excel-experts despise them - and with good reason.

Instead, highlight the cells that would be merged, go to Format > Cells > Alignment and in the Horizontal box, choose Center across selection. It gives the same appearance without the annoying side effects of actual merged cells.

Mind you, they cause problems in Word too [smile]

hdesk,

The answer depends to some extent on how your cells are merged. The reason Word can't work with non-uniform columns is that Word cannot be sure what constitutes a column - or which column horizontally merged cells belong to - neither can we, I'm afraid; only you know what you want. Maybe xlhelp's solution of splitting the table will work - if not, if you can give a detailed description of what you have maybe someone can devise a method for you.

Enjoy,
Tony

Word lets you convert tables to text and back again. Sometimes a way round, especially if you turn the column dividors into tabs and then add more tabs.
