Delete part of the value of a variable?

I use the environment variable $HTTP_REFERER:
$ref= $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['HTTP_REFERER'];
my question: if the value of $ref was i.e.

http://www.someserver.com/folder/file.html

, How can I delete the (/folder/file.html) section of this value to insert only (

http://www.someserver.com)

in mysql?

You can use the parse_url function to get just the host name.

$ref= parse_url($HTTP_SERVER_VARS['HTTP_REFERER']);

echo $ref[host]; // will output

http://www.someserver.com
