No you must enter a password whether it's your own or the administrator password. I've heard of a way around this but it involves deleting the SAM file but I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Is this a home PC or a work PC?
You can delete the SAM file and it will reset the administrator account (as if its a newly installed system)
1) Install a separate fresh copy of windows 2000 (no, it will not mess up your orig system - trust me) into a temp folder.
2) After install, the new copy will show up first in the boot order (this will allow you to boot, go to the file system and delete the SAM file)
3) go to your %systemroot%\system32\config
4) delete the file named SAM (if you are in doubt, rename it to SAMold.back)
5) edit boot.ini
6) remove the entry for the newly-installed windows 2000. it is the entry that points to your temp folder.
7) restart pc
8) as soon as you enter into your orig win2k system, you will be the default administrator
9) you can safely delete the separate win2k installation on the temp folder.
Thanks to you all, its been a pleasure, and I aprisiate the help. But I found out how to change the password at bootup if any one needs info let me know.
Menny, follow my instructions about deleting the SAM database. I have done it a couple of times whenever a user lost their windows 2000 password and cannot enter their desktops. Works perfectly
Friedy:
Please let me know how to logon into w2k. I forgot my password and have not been succesfull in trying to install a fresh copy of either 2K or XP.
Please help?
Thanks!
All,
This is the answer to your problems. As a support person I run across machines where the users have changed the default admin passwords, etc, etc. When I need to get into them I pull this floppy out and I get in every time. I did not write it, but it works like a dream. ENJOY
