I am trying to understand how Sharepoint works with regard to editing files. I am finding that if I edit a file and then save it, it many times does not show those edits for an unknown amount of time or until I exit sharepoint and then go back in.

Is there some sort of delay involved with this ?

To continue ...

I have since noticed that when using revisions ...

If I RESTORE a previous revised document and then try to view the document just by clicking on the name of the document in sharepoint, it has not been restored yet.

That also seems to be associated with some sort of delay.
This is annoying. Is it necessary or is there some way to stop this from happening ?

128 MB of ram: multiply by 10 and your problems will be solved (at least 512)
WSS eats memory

Well, it may not be that simple.

I tried this at a computer with 512 with the same result.

Here is some more information ...

I just edited a document then tried to view it immediately afterward at my computer and it showed me the previous version. I tried to view it many times (10+) for over 2 minutes. It never showed me the updated document.

I then moved to another workstation and logged in as me again and tried to view the document and it showed me the updated one.

I went back to my original computer and tried to view it and it showed me the previous (old) version.

I do not think that has anything to do with my RAM.

The plot thickens ....

Not sure if it is related but a similar thing seems to happen when creating new folders in a Shared Documents area. When you then view them in Explorer View, they don't appear for upto ten minutes

Check the settings on the clients!

This is a setting in MS Office. For example in MS Word, if you are seeing a delay you can change this option by:

Select View>>Toolbars>>Task Pane

In the Task Pane drop down, select “Shared Workspace”.

At the bottom you will see a “Get Updates” button and an “Options…” link.

If you click “Options…” it will open a “Service Options” dialog box.

Under “Workspace Updates” you can select “Get updates every __ minutes.” The default value is 10.

Hope this helps,

Charles

Another way to get there in MS Word:

Tools>>Options>>

Click the “Service Options…” button at the bottom of the “General” tab, and that will also bring up the “Service Options” dialog.

P.S. I put these directions together from Word 2003, so it may be different from previous versions of Office…

Looks good - I've reduced the time to 5 mins.
Many thanks
