i have an ip phone connected to a definity via linksys vpn router. my problem is i am having six to eight second delay before hearing the dial tone...pls help me with this one...

Try testing it out with IP softphone. When you login look at the audio options part of the program when you have an active call. You have way too much delay with a vpn connection and the signaling is lagged to and from the clan card (if thats what you're using). If you can login to the PBX and do a list trace station (station#) and then pickup you're ip phone you will see the delay.

if i use an avaya vsu5, will it help to eliminate or reduce the delay on the clan card?

Not sure about that particular device. If can reduce the delay on the packets then yes. You need to be able to control the qos but thats almost impossible from the house or remote site using a vpn device. Just ask if I can help further.
