Hi
If I open the property page of a drive under windows explorer, within the property page under Tools, there is a defragmentation section but the button is dimmed. How do I enable this feature ? Can't locate the software piece for this in the NT CDs. Search for this in microsoft website but :-(

Other than 3rd-parties, what about something built in Windows NT ?

Anyone would like to share, please.

Thanks

Windows NT doesn't have its own defrag tool. The defrag command will only become live if you install 3rd party software (such as Diskeeper).

I don't know why they put it there really as it just confuses people and your right they don't explain it on the MS knowledgebase at all.

Thanks Sferical and thatrenowned.

I have downloaded the Diskeeper Lite.
However this is not a full-fledged defragmentor. The deframentation done by this piece of software is not that good. However while running it won't disrupt the performance of our simple tasks that much. After the defragmentation ceased, I was informed that the my disk volume was still fragmented because it won't be able to have exlusive rights to move objects that are protected by NT. This could be solved by some ways, one of them is to run Diskeeper at boot time before other processes that hook exclusively onto the file systems get chance to run. However this feature would only be available in the commercial version.

It is still disappointing on why Mirosoft didn't built the defragmentor software piece into NT 4 which should be the basics functions of the OS. Instead defragmentation in NT become a commercialise business.

thanks again guys for your feedback.

Download the full featured trial version of Diskeeper from their website.

The theory is that NT didnt fragment as much especially if you're using NTFS, so it wasnt built in.

Norton Utilities also has some great tools for NT disk administration. I'm using an older version, from 97, but it's the best thing I've found for keeping track of disk space and disk fragmentation, cpu and memory usage, etc. Haven't upgraded since it's got what I need.
